How to set it
01Windows
Right-click the downloaded JPG and choose “Set as desktop background”. Or open Settings › Personalization › Background and browse to it.
02Mac
Right-click the JPG in Finder and choose “Set Desktop Picture”, or open System Settings › Wallpaper and add it.
03iPhone
Download the Phone file, save it to Photos, open it and tap Share › Use as Wallpaper.
04Android
Download the Phone file, then long-press your home screen, tap Wallpapers (or Wallpaper & style) and pick it from your photos.
05Zoom
Settings › Backgrounds & Effects › Virtual Backgrounds › + › Add Image (any JPG) or Add Video (the 1080p loop MP4; Zoom’s limit is 1920×1080).
06Teams
In a meeting: More › Video effects › Add new, then pick the JPG (Teams takes JPG, PNG or BMP).
07Discord
User Settings › Voice & Video › Video Backgrounds › Custom (needs Nitro). JPG, PNG, GIF and MP4 up to 10 MB all fit.
08OBS
Add an Image source for a still, or a Media Source with “Loop” ticked for the MP4. Keep it at the bottom of the source list so your camera and alerts sit on top.
Use them, credit the cat
Every galaxy background is free for your own screens, video calls, streams and videos. Credit it like this:

- The soundtracks are Purrple Cat Self Releases, free under CC BY 4.0 with “Music by Purrple Cat”.
- Never re-upload the music to music streaming services.
- Never register the music or the art in Content ID.
Questions
- Are these galaxy backgrounds free?
- Yes. Use them on your desktop, phone, video calls, streams and in videos, with credit: “Art & music by Purrple Cat (purrplecat.com)”. Please don’t sell them or re-upload them as your own wallpaper pack.
- Who made the art?
- Purrple Cat. Every background is real Purrple Cat album art, shown as it was released (only resized or cropped to fit a screen), and the animated ones are the official loops, made in After Effects.
- Is any of it AI?
- No AI. The art, the animation and the music are all made by Purrple Cat.
- What size is a 4K galaxy background?
- 3840×2160 pixels (16:9). Every background here also comes in 2560×1440 and 1920×1080, plus a 1080×2340 phone version (a straight 19.5:9 crop of the art).
- Can I use an animated galaxy background in Zoom?
- Yes. Zoom takes MP4 or MOV video backgrounds up to 1920×1080, so use the “Loop MP4 · 1080p” file. For a still, any of the JPGs works (Zoom asks for at least 1280×720).
- Which backgrounds work in Microsoft Teams?
- All of them as stills. Teams takes JPG, PNG or BMP uploads and recommends 16:9 at 1920×1080 or larger, so the 1080p or 4K JPG is the one to use.
- Can I play the soundtrack on stream?
- Yes. Purrple Cat Self Releases are CC BY 4.0 and never in Content ID. Credit “Music by Purrple Cat”. Never re-upload the music to streaming services, and never register it in Content ID.
- Is there a galaxy GIF?
- Yes, for the five animated backgrounds: Sea of Stars, Sea of Stars 2, Multiverse, Sands of Time and Night Train.
